There are two magazines which are fountains of information on security and other issues. Hakin9 is one:

The other is 2600, which has a slightly shadier reputation than it deserves:

My local Barnes and Noble carries both magazines.
Unix and Linux have a lot of tools with which to make tests, so the above poster's suggestion you try using Knoppix, a good (or awesome) Linux livecd developed by a computer consultant for his own use is an excellent one. Naturally a lot of crackers use Unix or Linux or both. As I'm writing this on a Debian box I agree with those who think it's a fine operating system. That said, being secure is better than being scary.
Find Knoppix at:

If your Serious about testing system integrity then you should look into using Knoppix or another program. Trojans are not where most of the damage is done. The real work is in Packet Sniffing. Also your interested in becoming an ethical hacker then i have something of a treat for you. Its a little expensive but you should look into attending these classes.

Thats an official class and an official cert for what you want to do.
