Problems with several internet browsers?

I have a Compaq laptop.

Recently, I installed Norton antivirus software about a week ago. I noticed that my default browser (SBC Yahoo Browser) couldn't even start up.

I click on the icon, the window appears, but the users list does not show and the program immediately becomes "not responding" status.

Also, during Firefox and Internet Explorer browsing, about every 2-5 minutes or so, the browser temporarily becomes "not responding", taking at least 30 seconds to get back to normal.

Several times when I open up Norton, and I try to close it, the computer freezes and I have to force the computer to shut down (holding the power button for ~5secs).

Can anyone tell me how to get my computer and internet browsing back to normal, without the constant "not responding" appearances?

- It won't load videos, sometimes opening new tabs just results in a blank screen, etc.

- I can't open task manager, nor can I open new programs.

- I can't open new folders or copy and paste things onto my desktop.

- I can't download things becaue the download dialogue box doesn't seem to open.

- Once in awhile I get an error message saying tosOBEX can't open a new dialogue box.

I use Windows Vista and I have antivirus software installed. I can't open AdAware to scan my computer. I also downloaded sdfix even though I know it's only for 2000 and XP but I can't run it.

I looked around online and it seems like I might have that New Folder virus, but in any case I can't even download the tool that'l fix it. What's wrong with my computer? :\

Definetly sounds like a virus. However, it is probably in the boot sector. Download "Avast Anti-Virus" its free and has a boot sector scanner, unlike many other virus programs. Avast has a free version you can download. Look in the program setup and select to scan at next boot up to perform this scan. Also disable "System Restore" before you scan.

So I clicked one result and 3 Popups and a dialog box asking me to download some free antivirus software appeared (I'm 99% Sure it's a WinFixer Clone), but I forgot about one thing, and clicked the X command in the dialog box. Suddenly a webpage opened. I didn't know what to do so I forced quit on my computer (I held down the OFF button). Now I know the whole bit on the WinFixer Trojan. I don't think anything downloaded yet because I didn't see the Firefox Downloads window. But now, I want to know, is it safe to turn my computer back on? I forced quit as soon as the webpage opened, but I'm not quite sure if it downloaded. This all happened last week. Can someone please help me?

Not a bad idea to leave it a while. Avast isn't known for false-positives (wrongly identifying an 'innocent' file as malicious) but it can happen. Give it a while and if your pc is working OK, then delete it. If your pc stops working OK then maybe research the file in the chest and see what it is, whether you actually need it.

If it's the free version you're using, stick with it as Avast protects against more than AVG and AntiVir. See:

Spyware is one of them so make sure you have anti-spyware software loaded on your computer and are running it. Also, a computer in general has to send and receive packets for normal network connectivity, so it could just be harmless ping information to make sure you are still connected. Check in the Windows Task Manager "Networking" tab and see how much of your network is being utilized. That will tell you more information. If it's less than 1%, you don't have anything to worry about. Probably just normal stuff. If it's above this, you can see in the "Processes" tab which processes are actively doing things while your computer is idle. This should give you more insight as to what processes are active.

You can use an external hard disk, and its a cost effective way to add a large amount of storage, but it isn't required.

Flash drives work fine.

My question--If a firewall is there to protect against bad things from getting through, why do you need anti virus, spyware, malware and the such?

ok , this just started happening , mabie 3-5 days ago . Now i have scaned my computer with antispywear and antivirus software and there are no infections . I turned off almost every program from startup , and i used crap cleaner to delete cookies , temp files and so on . So why is my computer starting up slow . Nonsense above^^^^. A little knowledge IS a dangerous thing, especially when one has an "axe to grind".

Norton Security Scan is simply alerting you to the fact that something has altered your default Windows Hosts file. (A Hosts file can be used for malicious re-directs by malware).

However in your case , you are using Webroot SpySweeper. SpySweeper has an option for "Common Ad Sites/Blocked Web Sites Shield". I an assuming that you have this "shield" active. This shield is accomplished by adding advertising and malicious sites to your Hosts file and redirecting them to an IP address of 127.0.0.1 which effectively blocks them. (127.0.0.1 is your own computer!).

I am 99% sure that you do not have any kind of a malware infection in your Hosts file. It.s just your SpySweeper doing it's job for you. And Norton is doing it's.

my mom recently bought a new computer and it has windows vista installed. my sister tested it out and tried to remove the antivirus software because it doesn't get updated and when she restarted the pc, the audio won't work anymore.. we tried reinstalling the sound driver but the pc won't allow the driver to be installed, the driver by the was is soundmax and it says "The audio driver files do not support your computer hardware." I accidentally downloaded a virus (or worm -- I don't know the difference between the two) from Limwire, which caused Limewire to start everytime I logged on and popup ads started to bypass my blocker. most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.

Yes, something is probably still there. Download and do a scan with Spybot and Adaware, also Hijack this. Then go to Start\Run and type msconfig. Go to the Startup tab and uncheck all of the unnecessary things that are running at start up.

Firewall:

Mostly Firewall won't effect the internet speed. I mean that it won't make your internet speed low. Yes we can say that firewall will block some of the Incoming Ports according to the firewall type which u are using. Some firewalls also make changes in your Browser like Internet Explorer or whatever da default one. So in that process a normal users feel like da NET connection is going slow.

Its Average. But if u configure it nicely, then i can say its Good.

Does anyone else have a slower Verizon DSL speed since Norton OnLine Protection replaced CA?

This November I signed on with Verizon for one more year of their supposedly High Speed DSL Internet. When Norton Online Protection took over for Computer Associates, my computer is running slower than with CA. I run all spyware and antivirus software daily and it is not slowed down due to these problems.

Well, Norton is a much more comprehensive program and requires greater system resources. You connection speed has not been affected but you system has slowed down because it simply can't handle a good Anti-Virus program like Norton. Best thing you can do to correct this is to turn off all the unnecessary programs running on your computer and upgrade your RAM. Programs like AIM and iTunes are set to "Auto-Run" when you install them and you need to disable this. RAM is the easiest and cheapest hardware upgrade you can make for your computer and you should really be running at least 2GB or more even with XP because of how demanding today's programs are. Programs like XP and Norton can run on as little as like 512MB but you will not get good performance out of it. Your computer ran fine with CA because it is a second rate protection program...just like many of the "Free" Anti-Virus/Spyware programs people will recommend. They don't use up as much of your system resources because they are not as comprehensive. I happen to have a Core2Duo CPU and 4GB of RAM and I run both Norton 360, the best available, and WebRoot Spysweeper at all times with no issues at all.

umm i find limewire to work great as long as you no what your downloading just dont download files with silly names. Kazaa was great for the time being but yes to many viruses go through it.
