You don't need to do that...McAfee automatically scans all incoming files. That option is there just in case you have an antivirus that does not automatically scan files.
I have install kaspersky 6.0 antivirus software. After this intallation when i start or restart my PC, icons at notification area are displayed very late(takes so much time).Insted of this when i restart my PC through CPU restart button, icons are displayed as usual(quickly).So i want to know how can remove this problem.
Well when u restart your computer through windows, stuff usually doesn't always leave computer some times they may stay in ROM or RAM somehow, so when new information is loaded it needs to be first removed to add new info into cmp, so those icons take time to load. CPU Button or electric button cuts of power so nothing remains everything lost, immediately nothing remains, so things are loaded newly and more free space available also when windows restarts it saves settings for load on next time this time there were no last shuit down settings to be loaded neverthless the antivirus application is a application that needs alot of RAM and processor power thus slowing down, all those packet capturing programs, defending and such keeping your computer healthy are big apps so they always slow down comp! typically they start last so u have to wait for the but my avast starts first and then the rest.. my comp is fast so it dont take much time anyways and also it is the least cpu resource hungry antivir program available

When a virus infects a file. It inserts it's signature in the file such that every time the file is loaded, the scripts run the viral script. When an anti-virus program cleans the files, it removes these signatures and TRIES not to replace any details of the original file. In case the antivirus knows what it is doing then the file becomes 100% same of the original file but when new viruses are cleaned there is no gurantee that 100% of the file is got back. Even though the file resembles the original file, it may lose some details that one may deem unimportant. It could even in some cases be completely destroyed as the virus can destrot the data of the infected beyong recovery by actually overwriting data on the infected file.

Most of the antivirus works on a simple algorithm on which they first backup the original infected file by creating a copy of it (excluding the virus code) and then delete the original file and paste the backup copy instead of the original.
This technique works quite well however some times this might damage the original file. In such cases you need either to reinstall the application that was infected or replace the original file by downloading it again.
If you doubt the file genuinity you can check its version from the file properties.
if ure not sure, search for the infected file on your computer. find where it is located, write down its name, search for the same file on another computer, copy that file, and use it to replace the infected file of your computer. It worked for me!

I wrote this morning complaining about Avira screwing up my computer. One guy wrote back that I could get free antivirus software from mcptutorials.info. DO NOT GO ON THIS SITE. I have WOT(Web of trust), which like site advisor warns you about dangerous sites. When I typed in that website, WOT warned me that this was a dangerous site!
The bottom line is.. you are posting on a public web board... the people on here are most likely not professional technicians and/or not professional information security professionals (like myself), etc.. and are many times providing biased advice that has no basis in reality and is oftentimes (as you have unfortunately found out) is malicious in nature.
The best possible solution for 99.9% of the people posting on this site is to invest in a proper security suite that includes complete protection (antivirus, firewall, antispyware, etc) and nis from preferably one RELIABLE vendor (like McAfee or Norton) and is properly configured and kept completely up to date...
this coupled with current windows updates, safe browsing habits and above all... common sense. That's it.
You don't need a bunch of freeware junk or anyhting else... just one good suite that is properly maintained and some common sense.

Folder Options -%26gt; 'Show hidden files and folders' already checked. Both 'hide extn for known file types' and 'Hide protected Operating System Files(Recommended)' are unchecked. Only when they are unchecked, the folders are visible but are greyed out like hidden. When I right click and check attribute, readonly and archive are enabled but hidden attribute is checked and disabled. When new folder was created, it automatically changed to hidden. I have run antivirus software and removed 3 viruses. Now am able to create folder properly. It is not hidden but old folders hidden attribute is still disabled. This happens to folders in USB drive only. Please help.
Sounds like some weird inheritance or system protection. But you can try the old attrib.exe program.

is this a newer gaming pc? if so, it could be using an SLI video setup. if that's the case, it could be one of many problems, including one of the two video adapters going bad. other problems may include the connection between the video adapter and the screen.
In an SLI setup, there are two video adapters. One renders the top half of the screen, the second renders the bottom half.

I just went to the shopdashonline.com web site (the Kardashian sisters' online store), and my Norton Antivirus software popped up and said that a virus-- Trojan.nebuler-- was trying to install itself, but was blocked.

I just tried it, and Trend Micro didn't block the site, and I didn't get any warnings. With the anti-virus software I have, it would definitely let me know if there were any problems...any. It was a mistake by Norton. Still, probably a good idea to update and run a scan before you hit the hay.

Have you got anti-spyware? This is most likely your problem. Also do not give them admin accounts to use, they download junk and infect the machine. I use AVG for ALL my clients machines, it never lets us down. Do NOT run 2 anti-virus at once, they conflict and reduce security by about 60%.

Disconnect the network connection and phone line if attached. Tag the computer. Do not restore the power for any reason. You are now ready to start your forensic investigation.
Forensics:
Grab a witness so you have someone who can verify every step you take. Make copies of any firewall logs or other access logs that might contain evidence and tag them. Lock up or leave at least 1 guard to insure that the computers are not tampered with if you can't watch them personally. Buy 2 new hard drives the same size or larger than the one in the attacked computer. Zero the new drives to create a known state. Remove the hard drive from the attacked computer tag it and attach it to another computer with the new hard drive. Make a byte for byte copy of the entire drive including empty tracks and sectors. Make a second copy using the 2nd drive the same as the first. Take the original hard rive out and place it with the other evidence gathered. Tag each of the copy drives and set one aside to use as a restore copy if needed.
I have a laptop running Vista 64 home edition. I can access the internet with internet explorer but once I try using ITunes or other programs that use the internet they cannot access the internet. It seems only microsoft programs can access the internet. There seems to be selective access here.
I have added all of the programs to the allowed list, I have disabled the firewall and defender and the antivirus software all without success. You need to change your passwords on your accounts, and get a firewall such as Zone Alarm.
If you have a keylogger hidden, Zone Alarm can keep the information going out.

I have found plenty of sites that will scan the computer but will not remove all of the viruses and/or spyware. AdAware helped a little and I have Symantec Antivirus software but when I do a full scan it is stopping in the middle of the scan and says it did not find anything. I know there is still something there because I am still having problems.
Get yourself a couple of good spyware cleaners. I recommend Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy. Both are free. After you've downloaded and got the latest updates for both restart your computer in safe mode. Safe mode is important because you don鈥檛 want any of the spyware or viruses running while you鈥檙e doing the scans. If they are running, the scan programs can鈥檛 delete them. Do each spyware scan one at a time plus a virus scan while in safe mode. Hopefully that should slove the problem. See the links below.

you can reinstall your windows, and if you do it, remove the internet cable until you install a very good antivirus, I sugest you install Nod32
Perhaps you mean anti spyware, you could get thousands of these if you don't have protection and they will slow down your PC.
Some good anti spyware to get rid of them are Spyware exterminator, Spybot, Spyware doctor starter edition, AVG anti spyware (free for only 30 days). And Super anti spyware or Ad aware for scanning only, they don't give real time protection except in their paid versions.
Also scan and get rid of viruses using AVG or Avast which are also free (use only one at a time) Avira is the third most popular.
McAfee, Sophos and Avira all sell good security products which provide "real-time" malware protection.

AVG (along with Norton) is notorious for disabling the features of other antivirus programs installed on the computer (or displaying the program files of the other antivirus software as viruses, so it can delete them).
Best bet is to pick which one works best and just use that one.

This dll file is "windows\system32\dpserialo.dll." have tried a number of antivirus software ( McAfee and Adaware, AGV ) to get this off my computer. Well Symantec (Norton) and McAfee are pretty much the standard in antivirus products. I've worked with both and of the two I think the McAfee product is less of a system hog.
Keep in mind though that these days just having antivirus software is NOT enough. You need antispyware software as well. Webroot's Spysweeper is probably the best out there right now. I've worked with a couple of different products and this one was most effective at detecting spyware. These are actually names of valid Microsoft processes. There is some spyware/viruses that use the same name. If you manually remove the wrong one your operating system will have to be reinstalled.

My computer is currently infected and I am not able to access my antivirus software to get rid of it. I have Mcafee and everytime I turn the computer on, it always takes forever to load up. When the computer reboots and you get back online head for http://www.avast.com and get their free personal virus scanner program (Home Edition).
It will run with McAfee but doesn't like McAfee's Firewall.
McAfee is not that good of a virus scanner, I have run it for many years and the only way I can keep my machine online is to run both Avast Virus scanner and McAfee as a token virus scanner.

Windows XP Service Pack (SP) 2 is not only "better" it is a requirement if you are using windows XP. SP2 is an "upgrade" if you will to the original shipment of Windows XP. It also Enables automatic windows update by default. And lets not forget the pop-up blocker added to Internet explorer.
Service pack2 does not however add anysort of anti-virus protection. This is still software you will want to purchase from companies like trend micro, symantec, mcafee, etc..
Ultimately there were alot of updates done to windows XP with Service Pack 2. If you have a machine running windows xp and put it on the internet you MUST install SP2.

Ok, I am not dumb, I consider myself pretty tech savvy, but I cannot figure this out. Obviously I know how to format a disk, by right mouse clicking on the a: drive and clicking format and going through the stps, but I get a Windows message that says the disk cannot be formatted.
So I opened the command prompt window and typed format a:/x
Doing that I got:
The type of the file system is RAW.
The new file system is FAT.
Formatting 1.44M
Invalid Media or track 0 bad - disk unusable
Oh, and typing format a: /FS:FAT/x gives me the same error
It is a brand new floppy, I just bought a brand new box of floppies.
And please don't tell me to use some more sophisticated media because believe me I would if I could, but I can't, it's for school, and I have to use floppies.
I am not running any antivirus software so that is not preventing me from reformatting the hard drive.

When you delete a file, the anti virus program does not scan the file as you delete it.
I don't know of any anti virus program that does that, i do know however if you right click on the file and choose scan with (whatever anti virus you have), it will tell you if it has a virus or not (also depending on your application)

The problem with the other file type is that most people have the option set on their computer to hide extensions. They may see a file name of cat.jpg which is really cat.jpg.exe. They don't question it when they see the jpg extension which normally would not show. Same with song.mpg which may really be song.mpg.exe.

Here's what you need to do.
1st, don't waste your time with AVG, spybot, ad aware, CA, spyhunter, superantispyware, avast, panda, windows defender or anything of the sort. Stay away from anything that is FREE when it comes to spyware and antivirus. There is a reason why they free. They are NOT good.
2nd, You need some of the best software out there. Norton Systemworks is very good. That's the only good software from Norton. I wouldn't recommend Norton Internet security, its not that great. Now the best software you should get is Spysweeper with Anti-virus, this software is too good and gets better everyday. This is elite software. It blocks over 173,500 threats. No other software can compete with that or come close for that matter. It catches everything. I've used them all and it is 2nd to none.
3rd, after you install and update the software, since its in your system you will have to turn off system restore and then go into safe mode and run the scan and eliminate the virus. then after removal, reboot and turn system restore back on.
4th, (Optional) I recommend a Firewall from Zone Alarm, their free version is so good. Or you can buy their Pro version, but the free version will do more than the job.

Your PC may be overheating and need some internal cleaning. It's a fail-safe so it doesn't destroy itself. If the PC works fine while it's on then that's all I can think of.

That's really hard to diagnose without knowing exactly what is installed etc. Basically, if you have tons of different software installed and you never update your drivers - the software itself could cause this to happen. If you have the original disks you could start uninstalling programs, defragmenting the hard drive, updating the hardware drivers then reinstalling the software.
However, it could also be bad RAM. I have a desktop and a few years ago one of the RAM memory sticks went bad but I didn't know it. My computer crashed 100 times and it was the most frustrating thing ever. I finally replaced the RAM hoping that it was a bad stick, and sure enough - it was 100% thereafter.

You don't say if the computer will turn on at all. If it does then install the XP disk. Turn off the computer. Turn it back on and immediately start tapping the ESC key repeatedly until the System Recovery screen appears. When the screen comes up offering you two options choose the CD-ROM option and then follow the instructions from there. Remember, you need to use the UP/DOWN arrows and enter key when doing this.

I've been receiving quite a bit of Spam e-mail in my yahoo inbox over the past six months to a year (I received 32 of them over the weekend). When I started receiving them, I was somewhat scared to open them, but then scanned some of them with antivirus software and when it said there was no virus threat, I opened some of them.

It shows there is spyware in the system. First install a firewall that will block all this types of incoming messages. Then use a spyware program to clean of the computer. Spy wares and adwares are mostly not detected by antivirus softwares.
My computer started freezing after start up only sometimes. I ran antivirus software and adaware. Then it froze completely on the desktop, not even the cursor would move, then wouldn't turn on at all, but i could still hear the hum of the fans going. I don't know what computer you have, or what version of Windows you have - I'm guessing you are using Windows XP and have the install disk. You can get a huge new hard drive these days cheap. I saw a Hitachi 400 GB for $100 -
I would install a new hard drive, then install Windows on it and start over again. Also can get a hard drive enclosure for the old hard drive for about $25 - put your old hard drive in it. It will just plug into the USB. You will be able to retreive your old data from the old hard drive and then use it as a back-up hard drive. Make sure you reformat it to erase any viruses.
If that doesn't work, then you may need a new motherboard %26 CPU. I found this set-up at TigerDirect for $150.

go to internet options, then go to advanced and change the active x settings. you could also dissable your firewall.
Have you checked your IE browser settings in tools - internet options? One of the options is to turn off Active X. Remember that Firefox browser doesn't support active x but will still allow you to download stuff, so try using that instead.

I have recently got a virus called "Trojan.Win32.LinkReplacer" it pops up everytime i use the internet and go to a different page. It tells me to download the antivirus software, but I know i shouldn't because ive read that is the virus. Does anyone know how to get rid of this annoying thing?

I suggest you download a good LEGIT antivirus program such as NOD32, Kaspersky or Avira AntiVir PE and do a full scan. Also download multiple antispyware programs, such as SUPERAntiSpyware (which is very good at removing this type of stuff) or Spybot search and destroy.

Some programs just won't run in safe mode. And i believe that your antivirus software may be one of them. Btw why do you want to run in Safe mode anyway. Safe mode is very restrictive.

Take the word of your system. You can't run the program in Safe Mode.
A lot of your system functionality is disabled in Safe Mode since you should be troubleshooting there, not configuring applications.
actaully, it is possible that you will not be able to use the anti virus software that you are talking about. Its because some softwares need few processes to be runinig, so making them run will make your software run.
But it depends on what software you got.
I suggest you install any freeware anti spyware and anti virus software that also work in safe mode.
Okay i have a Dell Dimension E521 which runs Windows Vista. Its pretty much new, we've had it for 2 months. After a while of being on the computer it stops letting me right click on things like so i cant save images, or copy, or paste. It wont even let me right click on the desktop screen. I also have it to where the tabs are at the top and when i open a new tab by right clicking it wont load, itll just say connecting, but still nothing happens. I have to restart my computer each time this happens and it interrupts whatever im doing on the computer. I dont know if its the internet (i have Charter Cable) because it did this on my last computer too (windows XP;dialup) I also know its NOT the mouse, ive went through a couple already. Try SAFE mode then do a system restore to a date when everything was ok. If this does not work, scan your PC with a different anti virus like Antivir, etc.
i agree with karz except for the antivirus id use and do use avast 4.7 home if thats the problem avast got the cure .
Several vandut trojan viruses are destroying my computer at this moment. You can search/google for "linux firewall" (i.e. linux modified to run firewall %26 nothing else). Lot of them available free but check them with your requirement
most live linux distros will do what you are asking for. my personal recommendation is centOS. it's the most stable one that's free. if you have tricky hardware environment such as a wireless connection or raid, then try opensuse. if you have an old laptop, you can try damnsmalllinux. for comparisons, try distrowatch.com.

Might be due to low memory, vista is a very demanding operating system.

Everytime after I log in, Windows security alerts balloon pops up telling me "no firewall is turned on" and "antivirus software might not be installed".
But I've got the most up to date versions of NOD32 and Comodo Firewall Pro running and I've been using them for ages. Windows Security Centre just started not recognizing them since last night. I only installed Babylon 7 and can't think of any other changes I did.
I tried clearing out my cache, the scanning with Spybot, AVG Anti Spyware, and NOD32 - no threats found; rebooted for a few times, still the same outcome.
Any ideas?

Turn OFF windows firewall and security. But not recomended. Also scan with Spybot Search and destroy (good antispyware software)

I had came across this pbm lot of time..yet to found out the correct solution but i can give u a suggestion for recovering your data... If u known with the folder name which u created, u can type that folder name, so that u r now able to view the files or folders inside that folders...(for eg: if H is ur pen drive partition type H:/Asok)..

No antivirus or antispyware protection is perfect, not even the expensive ones but a good mixture will help you clean your system and hopefully keep it clean. It is advisable not to run two or more anti virus applications as they may interfere with one another and cause false alerts.

If possible it is recommended that you load the application in normal mode but run it in Safe Mode. Safe Mode can be started by continually pressing F8 during the boot sequence. If you are badly infected you might need to run SuperAntiSpyware more than once to help clean your system. If the only infections now being shown are in System Restore, once you are completely satisfied that you can boot normally, you can either delete the infected restore points manually, or temporarily turn off System Restore.
Can I make it a slave to another computer to fix the problem. I have tried loading different antivirus software when it is running in safe mode but cant do it. I can't connect to the internet to run something from the web. Is there a way to solve my problem?
You may have to pull out the harddrive and put it in another computer as the SLAVE. Then you can use the other HD to run your scans. I suspect that you have some spyware or virus that has disabled your programs so you can not detect it.
If you transfer your data you may be transfering the problem also.

It you can, try and download avg 7.5. If not go online and try housecall on trendmicro.com. It takes a while for everything to update your computer, but once it goes thru it really is a good virus detection. Good luck, I dont know anything about slave and master with computers. Sorry
I think it's better if you have transfer all your data out and reformat your computer. Much safer and fuss-free, i think.
A good anti virus would most probably kill the virus at startup before the virus loads.

Get rid of McAfee and get AVG anti virus instead - it's free and doesn't do half the background crap that McAfee does.
aol active virus shield. i have this antivirus software on my laptop and i am very happy with it. however i notice that it is no longer available to download as aol have switched to a freeware mcafee suite. are aol going to keep providing update support for active virus shield or will it be stopping and, if so, when?
I can't find any info on this either; but as long as Kaspersky keeps supporting it, I'm keeping Active Virus Shield till it dies.

I suspect updates are down to Kaspersky rather than AOL, as Active Virus Shield is a version of Kaspersky Antivirus. I think you nominally get a one year licence when you install so it could possibly stop after a year of use.

ActiveVirusShield is still working as far as i know.
Its Kaspersky that decides to pull the plug.
