Internet speed?

How does an antivirus software and a firewall affect the speed of a dial-up internet connection?

How effective is windows-xp(sp2) firewall?

Internet speed?internet

Anti Virus :

Anti Virus only effects your internet speed when it connects to the NET for Live Updates. for example, if u are using Symantec (Norton) or something other anti virus, it connects to their server to get (download) the updated virus definitions. So thats mean LIVE UPDATE and in that process it will effect your bandwith (Internet Connection).

Firewall:

Mostly Firewall won't effect the internet speed. I mean that it won't make your internet speed low. Yes we can say that firewall will block some of the Incoming Ports according to the firewall type which u are using. Some firewalls also make changes in your Browser like Internet Explorer or whatever da default one. So in that process a normal users feel like da NET connection is going slow.

XP Firewall:

Its Average. But if u configure it nicely, then i can say its Good.

If u want to use the best firewall, then just go for "Zone Alarm".

to knw more about that, just type that keyword in google, or els i can give u more help about using the Zone Alarm.
